| Newry Mitchels GFC Golden Jubilee Celebrations 2006
This year (2006) is the Fiftieth year of the club, and all year, our special Jubilee Committee has been working hard to mark this important occasion.
In celebration of our club’s 50th Anniversary in 2006 a range of events and activities have been organised to mark this major milestone. Here is a summary of the activities for our Jubilee celebrations.
January 2006 : Launch of the Jubilee Celebrations
A night of music and dancing was held at Newry Golf Club on Friday 20th January to mark the official launch of our Jubilee Celebrations. With music provided by the legendary Taxi this was a fun packed evening for all.
March 2006 - Teams of the Decade Dinner
John Mitchel GFC has a proud tradition in Down football with many of our footballers having made significant contributions to both club and county success at all levels. The “Teams of the Decade” Dinner, a Black Tie event hosted by Jimmy Smith at the Canal Court Hotel on Friday 24th March, was a celebration of our football heritage.
During the evening many of our greatest footballers from past and present years were honoured with the announcement of five teams representing the five decades between 1956 and 2006. The evening culminated with the announcement of the Club’s Jubilee All Star Team representing the best in Mitchels football over a 50-year period.
June 2006 - Under 10 Super Blitz
Mitchels’ celebrated annual under 10 blitz is a major event in the calendar of many clubs throughout the country. The Super Blitz in the Jubilee year was the biggest and best yet hosted by the club and took place at Derryleckagh Playing fields on Saturday 3rd June 2006. St John’s and St Brigid’s, both from Belfast, took the Shield and the Plate on the day, and a great day was had by all, in bright sunshine.
July/August 2006 - The John McAleavey Jubilee Cup
The John McAleavey Jubilee Senior Football Competition will see a gathering of clubs in Newry never witnessed before. This unique competition guarantees a Mitchel win and no fix, because to qualify, each club must carry the name of John Mitchel.
Promising a weekend extravaganza of football, this event will take place in late July and early August, attracting Mitchel clubs from throughout Ireland and further afield.
November- Jubilee Dinner Dance and Jubilee Book Launch
The Jubilee Celebrations will be officially closed at the Jubilee Dinner Dance hosted at the Canal Court Hotel on Friday 24 th November. To mark the occasion, the club will be launching the Jubilee Book, which will provide a comprehensive review of the club’s history, through good times and bad, over the past 50 years.
Containing memorable photographs, entertaining and informative interviews with past and present members, and marking many of the key moments throughout the Jubilee year, this will be a must have for any one with an interest in the club.
