The Whites had a hard fought win over the Reds at Gerry Brown Park on Sunday
(27/12/09) in a very entertaining match played in freezing conditions. The Whites
dominated the early period under loud sideline directions with some fine footballing
skills on display early on. The Whites imposed constant pressure and made use of a
swarm tactic in mid-field, with the Reds arguing that the Whites had a numerical
advantage. At half time the Whites had scored 2 goals and 6 points - outscoring the
Reds by two points. It was hard to believe that some of the younger players were
playing u/12 football only a season or two ago and some of the older lads haven't been
playing in a while. The second half was a different matter as the Seniors dominated vast
areas of play but poor weather conditions made sure that the tussles for possession
were often epic. Poacher and Boyler were throwing dummies around like children in a
creche. However the Reds were unable to overturn the slender scoreline and with a final
flurry of points the Whites sealed the game and so ended the Reds three year
domination of this fixture. It would be easy to sum up this year’s match by mentioning
the cold weather (again), poor conditions, the often attritional style of football which did
not always bring out perfect performances. But the genuine competitiveness of this
hardy bunch, the craic and good natured banter is a credit to them and also was a fitting
memorial to Brian Campbell. |
