U12s win Championship Trophy
Pairc úi Cholmain, Ballyholland, Sunday 15th October 2006. Mitchels U12s pulled out all the stops to win the Championship trophy final, defeating Tullylish with the last kick of the game. Neutrals at the match described it as one of the best, most exciting games of football they'd seen all year. The game started with Mitchels racing into an early lead, with well-taken points from Brian Magill & Danny Talbot. Danny was then involved in the next score, as he delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Jordan Coyle, who shot to the net for the game's opening goal. This was followed a couple of minutes later by a great run from David Craven on the wing. He delivered a great cross from near the end line and Brian Magill palmed it to the net. Brian then followed this up with a well taken point. Meanwhile the Mitchels defenders were solid, Patrick Sweeney and Shaun Downey working to great effect. With the game now all Mitchels, 2-3 to no score, Tullylish were awarded a free by referee Peter McClorey which they duly converted. Then Mitchels won possession again, with Brian ‘Boru’ Magill making a great run from midfield. At the last minute he confounded the Tullylish defenders by passing to midfielder Gerry Hart, who kicked a great point. Tullylish pulled back another point from a free just before half-time. Half-time score Mitchels 2-4 Tullylish 0-2 In the second half Tullylish started brighter, scoring a point then a goal in quick succession. They were then awarded a penalty early in the second half, but Mitchels keeper Harry Dobbin made a superb save. Mitchels backs kept the team in it with some great defending from Martin Óg McGovern, Seán Tierney, Kevin Thompson and Seamus Morgan. Mitchels forwards meanwhile were wasting possession by looking for goal chances when points were clearly on. Tullylish then added a point – their first point from play, then the speedy Gerry Hart got through again for two points, ably assisted by super-subs Daryl Hughes and Gary Hart. Then it seemed to go horribly wrong for Mitchels as, following a pointed free, Tullylish’s best player Emma scored a great point, followed by a goal to level the score, from Tullylish’s Philip O’Neill. Full-time score Mitchels 2-6 Tullylish 2-6 Mitchels knew they had it all to do in extra time, especially as momentum was now with Tullylish. Sure enough, they scored two points, then a goal, before Brian Magill responded for Mitchels with a goal of his own. Tullylish added a further point before the half-time whistle. Extra time first period Mitchels 3-6, Tullylish 3-9 With the excitement levels now at fever pitch, Mitchels Captain Gerry Hart won the throw-in. He was fouled going up the field and duly converted the free. Then the unmarkable Brian Magill struck again for an excellent goal. Tullylish then pointed to equalise. One minute to go and the scores were level for the second time in the game. Momentum was now with Mitchels, and when young playmaker Jody McGovern was fouled Conor Sloan stepped up to take the free. Most people realised this would probably be the last kick of the game. The instructions from the line were clear – go for a point. He kicked it well, and the ball lobbed the keeper and hit the back of the net! The referee blew for full-time. Heartbreak for Tullylish, and delight for the young Newry lads. Mitchels players: Harry Dobbin, Seán Tierney, Patrick Sweeney, Kevin Thompson, Seamus Morgan, Shaun Downey, Martin Óg McGovern, Conor McCartan, Gerry Hart, Brian Magill, Conor Sloan, David Craven, Jody McGovern, Danny Talbot, Jordan Coyle with subs Daryl Hughes and Gary Hart. Man of the Match: Brian Magill.
