Two in a row for Mitchels Seniors |
| Mitchels 0-18 St Paul's 1-13
Four points down at half time - and it could have been more - and Mitchels hopes of
successive league wins looked shaky. In the second half, however, energised by the
frank half-time team talk from manager Marty Lynch, the appetite to win emerged.
Mitchels were without the speedy Stevie Quinn, who had suffered concussion in the
previous game. Marty Boyle and Damian Kearney were also unavailable through injury.
However, the rest of the team showed great character throughout the second half.
Yet the half didn't start well. Missed opportunities, in the form of a penalty, two
scoreable frees and a potential fisted goal meant that, for all their early possession,
Mitchels remained four points down. But they didn't give up. With Ciaran Conlon and
Shane Cooney in fine form at midfield, and both the half-forwards and half-backs
winning break ball, Mitchels continued to win the lion's share of possession. Aidan
Murphy had a great game at corner back, as did Brian Heaney at wing-forward.
Mitchels' second-half dominance then began to be converted into scores, and the
home team scored a run of five unanswered points. The last ten minutes were a tense
affair, with both sides exchanging points. Mitchels went ahead with a fisted point from
Dara Dobbin late in the game and, despite two wides from St Paul's in injury time, it was
Mitchels who finished stronger, with an insurance point from full-forward Ciaran McLogan
to seal the win. |
