With lots of parents down at a sunny Gerry Brown Park to see this challenge game,
Mitchels players showed great spirit against a strong Burren side. Both teams had
important players missing on holidays, but those who played showed great skill &
character & were a credit to their respective clubs.
Mitchels dominated the first half,
mounting attack after attack on the solid Burren defence. Mitchels won plenty of
possession, played as a team, but had clearly left their shooting boots at home. They
put up ten wides in the first half, and managed to score only four points. Burren on the
other hand were struggling to get & retain possession, and only made a few raids on
Mitchels' defence. However, despite sterling work by the reds' 'keeper, Burren scored a
goal, leaving only a point between the sides at half-time. Half time score Mitchels 0-4,
Burren 1-0.
The second half was very different, with both sides enjoying periods of
dominance. Burren scored two quick goals and Mitchels responded with a single three-
pointer. Burren then cut through Mitchels defence twice more to find the net, leaving
Mitchels 8 points down. However the town lads responded to the challenge, scoring 3-1
in the last ten minutes. It was not to be though, as Burren scored one further goal to
leave the narrowest of margins between the sides.
Final score Mitchels 4-5 (17),
Burren 6-0 (18)
Best for Mitchels were Gavin, Seán, Kevin, Conor, Danny and
Orlagh.
